this one is about petrarch ascending mont ventoux and being confronted with a nightmare vision of all the non-romantic things about the roman empire (slavery, crucifying jesus, sack of jerusalem etc). back in the day he was a real poindexter and he would write these dork ass personal letters to classical poets from 1300 years ago like he was meeting them bill and ted style. and this is kind of me doing the same thing telling petrarch that his well-intentioned dream of reviving rome ends up being embraced by some pretty nasty guys. dont worry about rome man its all about florence now
